Child Support

In almost all cases, child support is determined by the Child Support Guidelines. The Child Support Guidelines are a grid, where one looks at the gross income of the support payor, the number of children to be supported to determine the monthly amount of basic child support.

In addition to the basic child support, the parent must share the child’s extraordinary expenses (activities, educational expenses, medical expenses and the like) in an amount proportionate to their respective income.

Child support can be paid directly by the payor to the recipient, or paid through the Family Responsibility Office. If the parents do not agree, then it will be paid through the Family Responsibility Office.

When a payor’s income changes, or if a child is no longer eligible for child support, then the child support amount should be varied or terminated. Usually, we ask that the payor’s income be disclosed to the recipient once a year. It is then up to one of the parties to request a variation in child support, if required.

If a payor doesn’t pay child support, the Family Responsibility Office will record the amount of arrears and will attempt to collect the arrears from all available sources of funds.
